Our services can help to support the body and encourage normal function in those living with cancer. Acupuncture, oncology massage, and reiki are all recommended by the American Cancer Society to help relieve side effects of therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation and can be easily integrated into one’s care plan.
While cancer survival rates continue to improve because of advances, the treatments for cancer still can be quite challenging and taxing, often with many uncomfortable and debilitating side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture can provide relief to these side effects and help strengthen your body and its immune system during these treatments. In fact, many studies have proven just that, and as a result, many elite cancer centers across the country, including the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, offer acupuncture as support for patients who are undergoing cancer treatments, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
While the therapies offered at Orchid are not a substitute for cancer treatment, we offer supportive treatment using acupuncture, massage, reiki, Chinese herbs, and/or nutrition to reduce the toxicity and side effects of cancer treatments, alleviate pain and boost the overall immune system of the body.

At Orchid Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, we use a series of acupuncture points that help the body’s natural ability to promote healing. Each treatment is designed for you personally, based on your body, the type of cancer and the types of medical therapies you are already receiving.
We also help you evaluate your lifestyle to see if there are beneficial changes that can help promote healing between acupuncture sessions. For example, we might suggest nutrition and dietary changes to help boost the efficacy of your treatments or suggest breathing and relaxation exercises.
Many studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in reducing the side effects of cancer treatments. For example, even with administration of anti-nausea medications, at least 60 percent of patients receiving chemotherapy still experience nausea and vomiting. But a study in England of 130 cancer patients found that when acupuncture was added, 97 percent had reduced or no sickness after their chemotherapy treatments.
Other studies have shown that acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can reduce pain and swelling after surgery, as well as pain relief from cancer. Acupuncture has also been found to help patients undergoing radiation therapy who suffer from xerostomia or lack of salivation, edema or swelling due to the removal of lymph nodes and even menopausal symptoms from tamoxifen therapy.
